The Tennis Project
In April 2023, Medicare Foundation UK CIC proudly launched a Free Park Tennis Program with Lawn Tennis Association, MCR Active, and Wedotennis, as part of our commitment to promoting healthy living, fostering community cohesion, and encouraging physical activity among families. This initiative was designed to engage individuals of all ages, creating a welcoming environment for families to come together, have fun, and embrace the benefits of an active lifestyle.
Weekly Free Park Tennis for All Ages
The Free Park Tennis sessions is held weekly and open to everyone, regardless of age or skill level. Families, from young children to grandparents, have the opportunity to learn, play, and connect in a relaxed and supportive setting. These sessions do not only promote physical health but also creates opportunities for meaningful interactions between community members, strengthening bonds and reducing social isolation.
LTA Serve Program for Children (Ages 5–16)
As part of the tennis project, we introduced the LTA Serve Program, a focused initiative to engage children aged 5 to 16 years supported by the LTA and held at the tennis centre on a weekly basis. The program aimed to:
- Teach the fundamentals of tennis in a fun and accessible way.
- Instill values of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance.
- Encourage children to lead healthier lives through regular physical activity.
The Serve Program provides structured sessions tailored to different age groups and skill levels, ensuring that every child has the chance to learn and grow in their own way. Coaches and activators volunteers create a nurturing environment where young participants come not only to develop their tennis skills but also their confidence and social connections. Leading up to the Davis-Cup September 2024 in Manchester, Medicare was involved in a coin toss and stage interviews on the good work we are doing in the community.
Impact of the Tennis Project
The tennis project has had a profound impact on the community:
- Participation Growth: Weekly sessions have consistently attracted families and children, creating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere.
- Health Benefits: Many participants reported improved physical fitness and mental well-being because of regular engagement in the project.
- Stronger Communities: The sessions have fostered friendships and support networks, building a sense of unity within the community.
Looking Ahead
The success of the tennis project has inspired us to explore new opportunities to expand the program, including:
- Adding more locations to reach a wider audience.
- Introducing advanced coaching for children who wish to develop their skills further.
- Collaborating with schools to bring tennis to more young people.
At Medicare Foundation, we believe that initiatives like the tennis project not only promote healthy living but also bring communities together, creating a culture of care, inclusion, and well-being.
Together, we’re building stronger communities—one serve at a time.
